American Born Chinese is a strong graphic novel, but at times it is too juvenile and too obvious to be considered great. The concept of the three parallel stories is cool, and the way Yang brings them together at the climax is interesting, but more mature readers will find the oversimplified themes and short dialogue boring. The book does bring up good points about accepting one's culture, but often they are to far out in the open to be surprising. The use of the parable of the monkey king alongside Jin Wang and Danny's stories is a creative and fun touch. This book is a good read, but if you are looking for deeper meaning in a graphic novel, try reading V For Vendetta or A History of Violence. (Excellent review-good for BOC pass) |
