This book begins a series set mostly in the year 1632, in the midst of the 30 years war in Germany. King Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden is invading Germany and facing resistance from the mostly evil Austrian, French and Spanish monarchies. England is just being stupid (the glorious revolution, etc, would have happened in a year or two). This is the setting into which a small West Virginian coal town from the 20th century is suddenly transplanted: power plant, school, and mine. They rapidly become the focus of the unification of germany, allying with King Gustav to stop the predations of roving mercenaries and continental armies. They are (naturally) the heroes for good.
I enjoyed this slightly long book, as I tend to enjoy remakes of history. This book must be followed, however by its sequels, so you know if the town and the new US survives. (Great review-good for BOC pass #1.)
