This book was really good but it only makes sense if you're well educated on totalitarianism, communism and fascism, plus the Russian Revolution and Nazi Germany. If you don't know much about these subjects the similarities are useless and the meaning is lost.

I disagree with the previous reviewer- the portraits illustrated by Orwell of corrupt leadership and fascist regimes is striking, even for a reader not familiar with political history. It is hard to deny the disgusting behavior and corrupt rule of Orwell's regime. The lessons displayed and theory analyzed can be constant for every reader, regardless of their previous education.

i agree with review number 2. this book is a very good and effective social commentary on totalitarianism, but even if a reader has no previous knowledge on the subject matter the basic idea is still conveyed.

This book is fantastic. Although knowledge of the soviet union and the period that Orwell is alluding to is not vital, it makes the book much more enjoyable.

I haven't read the book completely but I did the play George Orwell wrote for it. I think it has a good plot and story line and really conveys what the authors opinions on Nazi Germany and totalitarianism.
The reason I give it 3 stars instead of 4 is that it was a little too gruesome for my liking, although I understand this is needed to fully grasp the situation many people faced and what kind of character Stalin (aka Napoleon [the pig]) really was.
